Sean Pendergast and John Harris
Sean Pendergast - Anyone who has seen the movie "GoodFellas" remembers Ray Liotta's line from the beginning of the movie where he professes his lifelong love for his profession -- "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." Well, for as far back as he can remember, Sean Pendergast always wanted to talk sports. From the early 80's phone calls to Arnold Dean (New England's "Dean" of Sports) to his tormented teenage years of following the 1986 Red Sox and the late Hartford Whalers, there was always something for Sean to talk about. In 1987, Sean took all of this sports baggage off to college with him to the University of Notre Dame, where he got to see arguably one of the best four year stints of college football at one school ever (one Heisman Trophy winner, one national championship, one Rocket, a 24 game winning streak, and four years of Ricky Watters perfecting his touchdown celebrations). It was at Notre Dame that Sean got his first taste of being behind the microphone, working at WVFI-AM doing play by play for various Irish sports and hosting his weekly "Sunday Sports Wrap" where he covered topics ranging from professional sports to campus keg races. In 1994, Sean's sales career took him to the city that would eventually become home -- Houston, TX. It was here that Sean gained notoriety as a local caller and occasional guest host at Star610 with John Granato and others. However, Sean's biggest claim to fame during his time in Houston was becoming the first caller outside of Southern Califorinia to win Jim Rome's annual Smack-Off coompetition in 1999, under the moniker "Seanie the Cablinasian". The term "Cablinasian" was coined by Tiger Woods to describe his own diverse ethnicity (Caucasian, Black, Indian, and Asian). While Sean can only claim one of these racial backgrounds as his own, he has continued to show Tiger-like tendencies in gathering titles in majors, piling up FIVE Smack-Off crowns. For those keeping score at home, Sean's titles were in 1999, 2003 and the last three years in a row (2005-2007) (NOTE: Sean attributes the subpar performances in 2001 and 2002 to Jim Rome instituting steroid testing in both of those years. Sean was noticably thinner during both of those Smack-Offs. He has since beefed up again, and...well, you can't argue with the results.)
John Harris - When 1560 The Game set out to significantly increase the IQ and cumulative SAT score of the afternoon show, they needed to look no further than the Professor himself, John Harris. A former three sport star at Lamar Consolidated, John became a two sport star in the media (prolific in radio and the written word), informing and enlightening predominantly on one sport – college football. (People will quickly find out, though, that he can inform, enlighten and entertain on pretty much any sport he chooses to.)
John's radio career launched back in 1998 when he began making weekly appearances on SportsRadio 610 in Houston on their morning programming, culminating with his extensive college football and NFL draft coverage with John Granato and Lance Zierlein from 2002 thru 2007. To put that in perspective, John has been covering college football during the tenures of FOUR different Notre Dame head coaches (including George O'Leary's inspirational five day tenure) going all the way back to a time when Michael Vick couldn't even afford a bag of IAMS dog food, let alone fund an entire underground dog fighting circuit (allegedly).
Because other cities are generally not as smart as Houston, it took a while but stations around the country began to stand up and take notice about four years ago that John is the real deal. As a result, the melodious harmonies of his voice were heard throughout the nation contributing to radio shows in nearly every area of the country. He has been a guest host on as many as 15 different radio stations, ranging from Pittsburgh, PA to Palm Springs, CA. John has also been a regular contributor to the LSU pre-game show on Saturday afternoons, which is perfect since 1560 The Game is Houston's home for LSU football in 2007. John has provided NFL draft commentary on numerous radio stations throughout the nation as well.
In addition to Harris' on-air experience, he also expresses himself quite well via the pen and keyboard. John has been a contributing writer for collegefootballnews.com for the past four years and A View from the Sideline for the past eight. Throughout the past four years, Harris' 'Keys to the Game' articles have been featured as the lead article on foxsports.com on Fridays. He was a featured panelist in the second version of the book Hail Marys and Heart Stoppers, College Football Best Finishes, while being a member of the Football Writers Association of America. In addition, Harris votes for the Lombardi Award, given to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman, and also votes for the ABC/ESPN All-American team. (And with all this talk of voting, John would like to make sure that all of you exercise your rights as an American and get out there and vote in November.)
In his younger days, John spent seven years coaching football and baseball at the secondary school level, after playing four years of football at Brown University. He received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Brown and his masters degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, which as we all know is a very typical educational background for someone in sports talk radio. (John Granato, for example, received his bachelor's degree in molecular physics from Yale before getting his masters degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins and an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne for his Nick's Place commercials.) As previously mentioned, Harris was an accomplished three sport athlete in high school, receiving all-state, all-Greater Houston and all-district honors in football, basketball and baseball at Lamar Consolidated in Rosenberg, TX, while also becoming the class of 1990's valedictorian. Basically, John has Game.
